Zayaa Mud Mosque

South of Bolgatanga in the village of Wulugu stands the Zayaa Mosque. It is made of mud but built in a completely different style than any other mud mosque in the region. It is square with a number of levels and looks more like an ancient defence castle than a place of worship. It was built in the 20th century by Sheik Abdul-Karim.

Location

Wulugu, Northern

On the way north from Tamale to Bolga, you can make a pit stop in Wulugu, a tiny and unremarkable town which is concealing one fascinating site: a bizarre, ancient house made of mud.

Just 20 minutes south of Bolgatanga in the village of Wulugu stands the Zayaa Mosque. It is made of mud but built in a completely different style than any other mud mosque in the region. It is square with a number of levels and looks more like an ancient defence castle than a place of worship. It was built in the 20th century by Sheik Abdul-Karim who was following his dreams that showed him where and what to build. The building combines a mosque and a house where the Sheik used to live.

The Zayaa mosque can be found in Wulugu on the Tamale-Navrongo road in the Northern Region of Ghana. The building can be visited but one has to take ones shoes off, since it is holy ground.
